Artist’s Statement
Katherine Dereli is a local Artist working in Liverpool. As well as creating sculpture and ceramics her recent work has tended to be focused on oil painting. The root of her work has always been a focus on accurate drawing informing both her sculpture and painting.
Representational paintings and sculptures are strange fascinating cultural objects. We often think of them as transcriptions of reality but, a lot of the time, they are more like personal statements about things written in a shared visual language. This language is taken from art history as well as cinema, graphic design and the selective attention fostered by everyday life. Katherine’s approach to her work is as a form of calligraphy inscribing on a canvas or a lump of clay, a reaction in our common visual language. Katherine paints, where possible, directly from the subject minimising the use of interpretative intermediaries such as photography finding it much closer to the raw perception. The work needs to be more like how things look to the Artist than how photographs of things look.
