Artist’s Statement
With its roots in Romanticism my work responds to the coastal landscape where I live.
I work intuitively and instinctively responding to direct experience of light movement, weather and space. I am fascinated by the notion of a spiritual connection between self and place and the selectivity of memory and perception. My process begins with instinctive drawings which use colour and ambiguous imagery to communicate memories and feelings amidst the ever changing atmospheric conditions. I then develop these responses slowly and intuitively into oil paintings.
I have exhibited drawings and paintings locally and nationally and have some work which is part of a permanent collection at John Moores University. I was also awarded the North of England artist of the Year at the last 21st National Open Art Competition in London.
