Artist’s Statement

My work is about colour and light. I love colour and am continually amazed by it’s effects, from muted ethereal tones to neon splashes. I create original and unique paintings that are personal reflections of places I have visited and often think about, such as the bustling and vibrant cities of Hong Kong and Taipei, to the soft Irish coastlines or seaside resorts and local woodlands of the UK.

I work in oil and cold wax and also acrylics and my process includes building up and scraping back layers of paint, looking at positive and negative space, the interplay of colours placed together and, increasingly, depth. My paintings have many layers, transparent and opaque, making the surfaces both subtle and intriguing. I am often asked if I begin a painting with an intention and it is a difficult question to answer. I am thinking constantly about colour and places and I enjoy seeing what emerges, sometimes accidental marks guide the paintings on. My work shows a personal and internal approach, my landscapes are an idea where emotion, solitude, wonder, obsession and longing belong – a world within a world.

I live and work in Liverpool, in the North West of the UK. I completed my degree at Central School of Art and Design and went on to work as a freelance designer for Liberty and Sanderson’s before beginning a 30 year teaching career, teaching Fine Art in schools and in Further Education. After a sabbatical in Japan and the Far East in 2016, I decided to leave teaching to concentrate on my own work. I exhibit throughout the UK and my paintings are held in private collections worldwide. Two of my tree paintings are featured in a book, “The Liverpool Art Book”.
